Rabbi David B. Kudan

Rabbi David Kudan was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Glencoe, Illinois. He is a graduate of Hampshire College and holds graduate degrees from Hebrew Union College and Harvard University. He was ordained a rabbi in 1987. During his rabbinic training, Rabbi Kudan studied Semitic Languages at the Catholic Institute of Paris and worked at a Paris synagogue. He has served congregations in the New York, Boston, and Chicago areas. Rabbi Kudan was Reform Rabbinic Advisor and Director of Outreach at Harvard Hillel, and last year enjoyed the privilege of serving as Rabbi in Residence at the Memorial Church at Harvard.

He has the distinction of serving as spiritual leader of two congregations in Malden Massachusetts, Congregation Agudas Achim – Ezrath Israel and Temple Tifereth Israel. Rabbi Kudan is a member of the outreach faculty of the Union of Reform Judaism, and in this capacity teaches introduction to Judaism courses in local synagogues. He has made outreach to the unaffiliated a major thrust of his rabbinic work, and enjoys working with individuals and families to create personalized courses of study and rituals to mark life cycle events such as Bar and Bat Mitzvah, Weddings, and Conversions.

Rabbi Kudan has been active in inter-faith dialogue on local campuses and is committed to building bridges between the Jewish community and other ethnic and religious groups. He is frequently invited to local synagogues and churches to lecture and teach on scholarly topics within his fields of specialization, including the ancient Jewish lore of angels and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Rabbi Kudan has pursued graduate work in Aramaic, Ethiopic, and Hebrew Bible at New York University and at Harvard, and is completing his Ph.D. at Harvard University in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures in the field of Second Temple Judaism.

He recently presented aspects of his dissertation research on the liturgical patterns in the Book of I Enoch, at the Society of Biblical Literature Conference in Washington D.C. Rabbi Kudan lives in Cambridge with his wife Professor Barbara Abrams, and his daughter Talia. His son Ari is a senior at Hamilton College. Rabbi Kudan enjoys baking and organic gardening.
